Above roughly 10 feet of width, beds beat benches for anything grown to maturity. A raised bed holds a far greater soil volume, which buffers both moisture and temperature dramatically compared to a container, so watering becomes less frequent and less critical. It also allows deep-rooting crops such as tomatoes to develop properly, which a 5 gallon container never fully permits.

The trade-off: Beds fix the layout permanently and consume the floor area that a bench leaves free underneath. They also need a large volume of growing medium, which is a significant one-time cost that surprises people.

Mesh versus solid tops

This is the specification that separates greenhouse benching from general shelving, and the reasoning is worth understanding because it explains a class of persistent problems.

A solid bench top traps a layer of still, saturated air directly beneath every pot. Water draining from the container has nowhere to go and sits in a film on the surface. The pot base stays permanently wet, the root zone at the bottom of the container goes anaerobic, and the still humid pocket under the bench becomes a reservoir for fungus gnats and disease.

A mesh top lets water drain clear and lets air move up through the bench. Pot bases dry between waterings, roots stay aerobic, and the space under the bench ventilates. In a still greenhouse this matters considerably more than it would outdoors, because there is no wind to compensate.

The exception is a potting station, where a solid surface is what you want to work on. The right arrangement is a mesh growing bench plus a small solid work surface, which is what a potting bench provides in one unit.

Use the space under the bench

The area beneath a bench is shaded, cool and humid, which is useless for most crops and ideal for several specific things. It is the right place for forcing rhubarb and chicory in the dark, for overwintering dormant plants that need protection from wet more than from cold, for storing bagged medium and pots out of the light where plastic degrades slowly, and for water barrels acting as thermal mass. Treating it as storage-only wastes a genuinely useful microclimate.

Height, depth and aisle width

Three dimensions determine whether benching is comfortable to work at, and all three have defensible numbers.

Height, 30 to 34 inches. This is standard counter height and it suits standing work, which is what most greenhouse tasks are. Lower and you stoop, which is the most common complaint about improvised benching. Higher and the plants on the bench are too close to the glazing, where they scorch in summer and chill against the panel in winter.

Depth, no more than 30 inches against a wall. Reach is the constraint. A bench deeper than about 30 inches has a back strip that cannot be reached without leaning across the plants at the front, and that strip either goes unused or gets used and the plants in it get neglected. A free-standing bench accessible from both sides can be up to about 5 feet.

Aisle, 24 inches minimum, 30 preferred. Twenty-four inches is passable by one person carrying nothing. Thirty allows carrying a full tray or turning with a watering can without knocking plants off the bench edge, which is the daily annoyance that makes a house unpleasant to work in. In a house under 8 feet wide, a 30 inch aisle is unaffordable and 24 is the practical figure.

Load, which is underestimated

Wet growing medium is heavy and the totals add up faster than expected. A 5 gallon container of moist medium weighs roughly 25 to 35 pounds. A 1020 tray full of wet plugs weighs around 10 to 15 pounds. A 24 inch by 6 foot bench holding twelve 5 gallon containers is carrying 300 to 400 pounds.

Most staging is adequately rated for this, but improvised benching frequently is not, and the failure is memorable. Check the stated load rating per shelf and compare it against a realistic full load rather than a light one. Bench collapse is also usually progressive rather than sudden: legs splay, the top sags, and pots begin sliding toward the middle.

For beds, the load consideration is different and larger. Bed legs that raise a galvanized bed to working height convert a ground-level bed into a waist-height one, which transforms the ergonomics, but the supported weight is substantial: a 4 by 2 foot bed 12 inches deep holds about 8 cubic feet of medium, which wet is on the order of 400 to 600 pounds. That needs proper support rather than improvisation.

Mobility

One overlooked category is anything that lets a heavy container be moved without lifting it.

Plant caddies on castors are genuinely useful in a greenhouse for two reasons beyond the obvious. They allow a large container to be rotated so all sides receive light, which matters in a house where light comes predominantly from one direction and plants lean. And they allow a tender plant to be moved out for summer and back in for winter without a two-person lift, which is the practical constraint on how many overwintering plants a grower keeps.

They also lift the pot base clear of a wet floor, which does the same job for a floor-standing container that a mesh bench does for a benched one.

How we chose

We did not load-test this benching, and any site claiming its own structural testing of six staging units is telling you a story. We compared published dimensions against the working heights and reach limits above, stated load ratings, top construction, frame material and corrosion resistance, and verified owner reviews weighted toward multi-season use in damp conditions.

Corrosion drove the ranking more than anything else, because a greenhouse is a permanently damp building and it is unforgiving of materials chosen for a garage.
