A ready-made light stand versus strips on a shelf

The short answer

A ready-made stand is the better buy if you want seedlings under light this weekend and have nowhere obvious to hang strips. Strips on existing shelving deliver more light per pound and can be doubled up where a crop needs it, but you are buying hangers, a timer and a socket strip too. The trap with stands is wattage: the cheap ones are fine for germination and too weak to hold transplants.

Both approaches end in the same place: trays of seedlings a few inches under light for fourteen to sixteen hours a day. The difference is how much assembly and specification work you do yourself, and how much light you end up with.

Wattage per tier is the number to check

Stands are sold on tier count and rarely on light output, which is where the disappointment comes from. It will not hold a tomato transplant for six weeks without stretching.

What the strip route actually costs

People compare a stand price against a strip price and conclude strips are far cheaper. + How many watts of LED do seedlings need?

Wattage is a poor proxy because efficiency varies, but as a rough guide around 20 to 30 W of modern LED per square foot of tray, hung a few inches above the canopy, suits seedlings. The number worth targeting is PPFD at leaf level rather than watts at the wall, and the DLI calculator converts an intensity and a run time into the daily total the crop needs.

+ Can I use ordinary LED shop lights instead of grow lights?

Full-spectrum white LED shop lights at around 4000 to 5000 K grow seedlings perfectly well, and many products marketed as grow lights are the same hardware with different packaging. What matters is output and how close you can hang it. Avoid very low output strips sold on colour rather than on watts.

+ Do I need to raise the lights as plants grow?

Yes, and this is where fixed-shelf stands lose out. Light intensity drops sharply with distance, so a fixture that was correct over a freshly sown tray is too far away three weeks later. Rope hangers make this a ten second job. On a stand you are limited to the shelf positions the frame offers.

+ Should the lights be on a timer in a greenhouse with daylight?

Yes. Supplementary light is usually run either side of daylight to extend the day to a consistent length, and a timer is the only practical way to do that. In late winter, when natural light is both short and weak, running lights through the middle of the day as well is often worthwhile on dull weeks.
