Bubble insulation versus thermal mass

The short answer

Bubble insulation reduces how fast heat escapes, which cuts heating cost, but every layer also cuts light, and in winter light is the scarcer resource. Thermal mass, usually water in barrels, absorbs surplus heat during the day and releases it overnight, flattening the temperature swing without costing any light at all. Insulate the surfaces that are not doing useful light work, and add mass where it will sit in the sun.

Winter greenhouse temperature has two problems: not enough heat, and losing what heat there is. Insulation addresses the second. Thermal mass addresses neither directly and instead moves heat in time, taking the surplus that would have been vented away at midday and returning it at three in the morning.

That distinction matters because it decides where each belongs.

Insulate what is not earning its light

The north wall of a greenhouse in the northern hemisphere contributes very little direct light and loses heat at the same rate as every other pane. Lining it with FONUNO Reflective Bubble Insulation Roll, 23.6 in x 10 ft ($11.69) costs almost nothing in useful light and cuts a meaningful share of the loss. The same argument applies to knee walls below bench height, where light passes under the bench and does nothing.

A narrower roll such as Reflective Double-Bubble Insulation Roll, 16 in x 10 ft ($9.95) suits exactly those strips: bench fronts and the band of glazing below staging.

What is much less obviously worthwhile is lining the whole house. It works thermally and it dims the interior at the darkest time of year, and a crop short of light is not helped by being a degree warmer.

Mass has to see the sun

Water holds far more heat per litre than stone, brick or concrete, which is why barrels are the standard approach in hobby houses.

Mass placed in shade does nothing useful. Mass placed where it blocks light from a crop is a net loss. The right position is the surface the sun already lands on and that you were not growing on anyway, which in most houses is the north wall and the floor beneath the staging.

This is often presented as a downside and is usually a benefit. A greenhouse that runs to 100 degrees at midday and drops to freezing at dawn stresses plants at both ends. Mass narrows that swing from both directions, which is why a house with barrels in it feels more forgiving to grow in even when the minimum temperature has barely moved.

Do these in order

Seal air leaks first, because a draught defeats both. Then insulate the surfaces that are not doing light work. Then add mass. + How much light does bubble insulation block?

Enough to matter in midwinter, which is exactly when it gets fitted. Figures vary by product and by how clean and how new the material is. The practical approach is to line surfaces that contribute little useful light, chiefly the north wall and any glazing below bench height, and to leave the south-facing glazing clear, rather than lining the whole house and wondering why the crop stalled.

+ How many water barrels does a greenhouse need?

There is no single figure, because it depends on the volume of the house, the glazing, how much sun the barrels receive and what temperature swing you are trying to flatten. A common hobby approach is a row of barrels along the north wall, filling the space that was not growing anything. More mass narrows the swing further, and the limit is usually floor space rather than diminishing returns.

+ Should barrels be painted black?

A dark surface absorbs more solar radiation, so painting them dark increases how much heat they take up during the day. Black is the usual choice. Bear in mind that a barrel in the sun full of water is also a warm nutrient-poor environment where algae grows, so a sealed drum used purely as mass is easier to keep than an open one.

+ Is it worth insulating a greenhouse floor?

The floor is generally the surface you least want to insulate, because soil under a greenhouse acts as thermal mass in its own right, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. A solid path is worth having for practical reasons, but sealing the whole floor with an insulating layer removes a heat store you already own for free.
