The practical consequence is that a grower who standardizes on 1020 can change cell density between crops, swap trays between mats and shelves, and add capacity without re-planning anything. A grower who buys assorted trays in various sizes ends up with a bench where nothing fits anything else.

The medium, which is the most common mistake

Using potting compost to start seed is probably the single most frequent propagation error, and it fails for two independent reasons.

Texture. Potting compost is coarse, with bark and perlite fragments sized for established roots. A seed sown into it sits in a large air pocket as often as in contact with moist medium, which produces patchy germination. Starting mixes such as the Burpee coir mix are milled fine specifically so that every seed makes contact with moisture on all sides.

Nutrition. Potting compost is fertilized for growing plants. A germinating seed has its own food reserve in the cotyledons and needs none, and high salt concentration in the medium actively inhibits germination and can burn emerging roots. Starting media are deliberately low in nutrients, which is why seedlings need feeding once true leaves appear and not before.

Move up to a growing medium such as potting mix or a richer mix at potting on, which is the point where the seedling has exhausted its seed reserve and needs a nutrient supply.

Coir pellets are a middle path worth knowing about: coir has excellent water-holding and air-filled porosity, is a renewable byproduct, and compresses for storage. Its one quirk is that it can carry high potassium and sodium unless well washed, so buffered horticultural grade is worth choosing over generic coir.

Damping off is a moisture and airflow problem

Seedlings that emerge well and then collapse at soil level within days have damping off, a fungal disease that is almost entirely preventable rather than treatable. The conditions that cause it are a consistently wet surface, still air and overcrowding. The interventions that work are watering from below so the surface stays drier, running a fan for gentle air movement, sowing thinly, using clean trays and fresh medium, and taking domes off once germination is complete. By the time it appears, treatment is rarely worthwhile and starting again is faster.

Watering from below

Bottom watering is the standard propagation practice and it addresses three problems at once, which is why it is worth setting up deliberately rather than doing occasionally.

It keeps the surface drier, which is the single most effective damping-off prevention. It waters evenly, because capillary action draws moisture up through the whole medium rather than channelling down through the path of least resistance. And it does not disturb seed or wash out fine medium, which overhead watering does regardless of how gentle the rose is.

Two practical implementations. Capillary matting laid in a solid tray under the cell inserts wicks water up continuously, which suits a bench where trays are left for days. Self-watering trays with an integral reservoir do the same in one unit.

The one rule with bottom watering is not to leave trays standing in water permanently. Fill the reservoir, let the tray take up what it needs over twenty to thirty minutes, and pour off the excess. Cells sitting in standing water become anaerobic, which kills roots as effectively as drought does and looks similar.

Domes, and when to take them off

A humidity dome does one job: it keeps the medium surface from drying while seed germinates and roots establish. It is not a growing environment.

Leave it on until germination is complete across the tray, then begin venting. Most domes have adjustable vents, and the correct sequence is to open them progressively over several days rather than removing the dome in one step. A seedling that has grown in near-saturated air has not developed the leaf cuticle to handle room humidity, and abruptly removing the dome wilts them.

The argument for a tall dome such as the AC Infinity dome is timing. A 2 inch dome is touched by seedlings within days of emergence, which forces removal at the point of maximum vulnerability. A 7 inch dome allows the transition to happen when the plants are ready rather than when the plastic runs out.

For crops needing very high humidity for extended periods, such as cuttings, a pot and dome set handles individual plants better than a shared tray, since each can be vented on its own schedule.

Specialist propagation

Three items outside the standard tray setup are worth knowing about.

Microgreen kits are a genuinely different crop rather than a variation on seedlings. Microgreens are harvested at the cotyledon or first true leaf stage, which means no potting on, no transplanting, and a cycle of roughly one to three weeks. They need less light than transplants, no bottom heat for most species, and they are the fastest possible return on a propagation bench. Covered in the microgreens growing guide.

Germination paper is a testing tool rather than a growing one, and it answers a question that saves whole sowings: whether the seed is viable. Ten seeds on damp paper in a warm place, counted after the expected germination period, gives a percentage. Old seed testing at 30 percent should be sown at three times the density or replaced, and finding that out before committing tray space is worth the five minutes.

Grafting tape belongs to a different discipline again, relevant to fruit growers propagating tree fruit and to tomato growers using grafted rootstocks for disease resistance and vigour under cover, which is standard practice in commercial greenhouse tomato production.

How we chose

We did not run comparative germination trials, and any site claiming controlled trials across four tray types is telling you a story. We compared published dimensions against the 1020 standard, material gauge where stated, dome height and vent design, drainage configuration, and verified owner reviews weighted toward repeated seasonal use.

Tray gauge drove much of the ranking, because it is the property that separates a tray you use once from one you use for a decade, and it is rarely stated numerically. The reliable proxies in owner reports are whether a full tray can be lifted from one end without flexing, and whether trays crack at the corners after a season.
