Watering is behind more greenhouse crop failures than any other single factor, and the failures are usually about consistency rather than quantity. Blossom end rot is a calcium transport failure caused by irregular supply, not a calcium shortage. Fruit splitting follows a dry period ended by a heavy watering. Bolting in salad follows a check. All three are consistency problems.

What drip actually fixes
It removes the human variable. A crop watered when convenient is watered irregularly, and irregularity is what causes the specific disorders above. A timer delivers the same volume at the same hour regardless.

What hand watering actually gives you
The case for hand watering is not nostalgia. It is that watering by hand is the only routine that guarantees you look at every plant every day.
Aphids on a growing tip, the first stippling of spider mite, a seedling collapsing at soil level, a truss that has set badly, a leaf yellowing at the base of a plant: all of these are visible days or weeks before they become expensive, and all of them are caught by someone walking down the bench with a can.
