Drip irrigation versus hand watering

The short answer

Drip irrigation on a timer removes the single largest source of inconsistency in greenhouse growing, and inconsistent watering causes blossom end rot, fruit splitting and bolting. Hand watering wins on daily inspection and on adapting to what the crop actually needs. The best answer for most houses is drip on a timer for beds and containers, with a wand for trays and anything that does not suit the fixed system.

Watering is behind more greenhouse crop failures than any other single factor, and the failures are usually about consistency rather than quantity. Blossom end rot is a calcium transport failure caused by irregular supply, not a calcium shortage. Fruit splitting follows a dry period ended by a heavy watering. Bolting in salad follows a check. All three are consistency problems.

That reframes the comparison. The question is not which method delivers water better. It is which method delivers the same amount at the same time on the day you are not there.

The row worth dwelling on is daily inspection. Hand watering forces you to look at every plant every day, and that is how problems get caught early. A drip system removes the reason to walk down the bench.

What drip actually fixes

It removes the human variable. A crop watered when convenient is watered irregularly, and irregularity is what causes the specific disorders above. A timer delivers the same volume at the same hour regardless.

It keeps water off the foliage. Nearly every greenhouse fungal disease needs several hours of liquid water on a leaf surface. Drip puts water at the root zone and nowhere else, which removes that condition entirely. The mechanism is set out in humidity and disease control.

It waters in the morning without anyone getting up. Morning watering lets foliage dry before dark and gives the plant water at the start of its hardest transpiring period. A timer does this reliably; a person does it on days they are around at that hour.

What hand watering actually gives you

The case for hand watering is not nostalgia. It is that watering by hand is the only routine that guarantees you look at every plant every day.

Aphids on a growing tip, the first stippling of spider mite, a seedling collapsing at soil level, a truss that has set badly, a leaf yellowing at the base of a plant: all of these are visible days or weeks before they become expensive, and all of them are caught by someone walking down the bench with a can. A drip system on a timer removes that walk from the routine, and plenty of growers discover a problem a fortnight later than they otherwise would have.

Hand watering also adapts instantly. A dull cool week needs less water and a hot bright one needs more, and a person adjusts without thinking while a timer keeps delivering the summer program into a cold snap. The failure mode of automation is that it removes the reason to inspect. If you fit a drip system, replace the daily watering walk with a daily inspection walk, and do it at the same time. It takes two minutes, and it is what preserves the one genuine advantage hand watering had.

The maintenance drip actually needs

Drip systems are not fit-and-forget, and the two failure modes are both silent.

  1. Emitters clog. Hard water leaves mineral deposits, and rainwater carries debris and algae. A blocked emitter waters nothing while the timer reports success. Check flow at every emitter periodically, and fit an in-line filter on any rainwater feed.
  2. Timers fail or lose their program. A battery timer that dies leaves the system off, which in high summer is a lost crop within days. Check the display when you walk past.
